Capture One Portable is a cutting-edge image editing software developed by Phase One, a renowned Danish company specializing in high-end digital photography solutions. Designed for professional photographers, it provides an extensive suite of tools for image processing and enhancement, from the moment of capture to final output.
Advanced RAW File Processing
One of Capture One Portable’s standout features is its ability to handle RAW files—the unprocessed image format generated by digital cameras. Unlike JPEG or TIFF, RAW files retain more image data, offering superior flexibility when fine-tuning exposure, color balance, and other crucial parameters.
Superior Color Management
The software excels in color management, featuring support for ICC profiles and custom color profiles. This ensures accurate, consistent color reproduction across various devices, including monitors, printers, and web displays. With these tools, photographers can maintain true-to-life colors in every image.
Precision Editing Tools
Capture One Portable offers a comprehensive range of adjustment options for exposure, contrast, sharpness, and other key attributes. Users can fine-tune their images using intuitive sliders, or employ advanced techniques like curves and levels for more refined control.
Customizable Workflow
A highly flexible workflow management system allows users to create custom workflows that cater to their specific needs. Automated tasks such as file importing, metadata tagging, and batch processing enhance efficiency—especially valuable for photographers handling large volumes of images.

The Future of Professional Photo Editing
Capture One Portable continues to refine its tools, providing photographers with an intuitive yet powerful platform for image enhancement. With its industry-leading features and commitment to quality, it remains a top choice for professionals aiming to produce stunning, high-quality images.
Smart Adjustments for Effortless Editing
Smart Adjustments can be integrated into Styles, allowing additional refinements and bringing editing closer to a one-click process.
The initial version of Smart Adjustments is tailored for photographers specializing in portraits, weddings, events, and other people-centric images. It offers two primary functionalities:
- Smart Adjust Tool – This tool enables users to select a reference image with an ideal white balance and exposure, where the subject’s face is visible. The reference settings can then be batch-applied to other images, ensuring consistent white balance and exposure.
- Smart Tuning Tool – Found in the Tuning tab of the default workspace, this tool provides precise control over adjustments.
Smart Adjustments can be saved within Styles (Smart Styles), allowing them to be reused for consistent edits. These Smart Styles function similarly to regular styles but automatically refine white balance and exposure. They can be applied in bulk, such as during image import, streamlining the workflow.
Note: Smart Adjustments do not support layers.
For instance, you can create customized Smart Styles that include frequently used settings or develop a style that only corrects white balance for quicker portrait retouching.
Important Considerations
The first iteration of Smart Adjustments relies on facial detection for accurate adjustments. If no faces are detected, the modifications may vary significantly.
Enhanced Image Selection and Importing
A new culling feature helps photographers efficiently sort and select their best shots using dedicated tools designed for high-volume workflows. Users can now view, rate, tag, and search through images seamlessly.
Key features available in both the importer and culling view include:
- Smooth, lag-free browsing without needing to generate previews.
- Group display of similar images.
- Star ratings and color labels for efficient organization.
- Instant 100% zoom for sharpness assessment.
- Advanced filtering options.
- The ability to adjust capture time for chronological accuracy.
Two Access Points for Culling
- Importer – Now equipped with enhanced search and grouping capabilities, the importer enables photographers to review and organize images before importing them into Capture One. It also allows for time adjustments to ensure proper sequencing.
- Culling View – If images are already imported, the new culling view (found in the toolbar alongside Import and Export) provides a streamlined interface for quickly sifting through large batches of images without needing to render previews.
Advanced Style Customization with Layers
With Capture One 23, styles can now include layers, enabling multiple layered edits with predefined opacity settings. This enhancement provides greater flexibility and efficiency in the editing process.
- Styles can incorporate one or more layers, each with adjustable opacity (defaulted to 50%).
- Users can easily fine-tune the effect of each layer, allowing for greater control over the final image.
- Note that styles support only empty and filled masks. Manually brushed masks will be saved as empty layers, while healing, cloning, luminosity, and gradient layers are currently unsupported.
Time Adjustment for Synchronized Workflows
Users can now modify image capture timestamps to synchronize multiple cameras or correct incorrect time settings. This feature is available in the main menu, right-click options, and Metadata/File Information tools. Additionally, time adjustments can be made before importing images via the File Info tool.
This functionality is particularly useful for wedding and event photographers using multiple cameras or for those working across different time zones.
Capture One Live: Reviewer Management
Capture One Live now offers improved control over online sharing sessions. Photographers can manage who accesses their sessions and what they can do.
A new “Manage” option is available for each session, opening a control panel where users can:
- Invite specific reviewers via email, who will receive notifications.
- Set access levels, choosing between no access, viewing only, or full interaction (rating, tagging, commenting).
- Directly access sessions as the photographer.
While sessions can still be shared via a public link, password protection has been replaced with email-based authentication. Invited users must enter their email address to receive a One-Time Password for verification.
- Identified users can leave comments under their name.
- If public access remains enabled, anonymous participation is still an option.
These updates streamline the review process, ensuring better security and control while maintaining flexibility in collaboration.
